01 / Why Safety Crossing Bridge

The weakest point of an excavation site is not the trench, but its edge.

When a power, water, gas or communication line is being laid, the trench stays open for days. On either side there are homes, shops, schools and bus stops — people do not stop crossing; they simply cross somewhere worse.

On site the gap is usually bridged with whatever is at hand: a plank, a pallet, two pieces of formwork stacked on top of each other. None of these are designed for pedestrian loads; they become slippery when wet, flex in the middle and slide off the edge into the trench.

The TULUX safety crossing bridge is made for exactly this need. It sits over the trench and transfers the load to both sides; with its anti-slip platform, removable handrail and ramped edges, it leaves nothing about the crossing to chance. When the work is done it is lifted out and moved to the next trench.

The risk of an improvised fix
  • Slipping and falling on a wet timber surface
  • Flexing and breaking under load
  • Covering that slides off the edge into the trench
  • A step height impassable for wheelchairs and prams
  • An unmarked crossing point, invisible at night

Parts of the safety crossing bridge: handrail, anti-slip platform, warning stripe, ramped edge
On site · urban trench
  1. 01
Handrail Gives support on both sides and keeps pedestrians away from the trench edge. Removable for storage and transport.
  2. 02
Anti-slip platform The textured surface grips wet and muddy footwear. It transfers the load to both edges rather than along the trench.
  3. 03
Warning stripe Red-and-white striping and a yellow body make the crossing visible from a distance and after dark.
  4. 04
Ramped edge A sloped edge that leaves no step between ground and platform, so prams and wheelchairs can pass.
  5. 05
Bearing surface Sits fully on the firm ground either side of the trench, preventing sliding and tipping under load.

04 / Installation

In a matter
of minutes.

No tools required. The bridge is unfolded, positioned and the handrail fitted.

01
Choose the crossing point

Pick the place where pedestrian flow naturally concentrates — a shop entrance, a bus stop, the line of a pedestrian crossing. Setting the bridge perpendicular to the flow stops people walking along the trench and crossing further away.

02
Prepare the bearing surfaces

Make sure the ground on both sides of the trench is firm and level. Compact any loose backfill; if the edge has slumped, set the bridge further back from it.

03
Position the bridge and fit the handrail

Lower the platform so that it bears fully on both sides and check that the ramped edges meet the ground. Fit the handrail into its sockets, secure it and check by hand that there is no movement.

04
Mark the surroundings

Guide the approach with barriers and tape, and add a warning light for night-time. Keep the remaining open sections of the trench covered.

Post-installation check
  • The platform does not rockNo movement or rattling when pressed in the middle.
  • The ramped edge meets the groundNo step left for a toe to catch on.
  • The handrail is secure on both sidesIt must not loosen under sideways load.
  • The crossing is visible from a distanceMarked with tape by day and a lamp at night.
  • The approach path is clearNo materials, hoses or cables across the crossing line.
05 / Applications

Wherever a trench is open.

Municipalities · utilities · contractors
Urban Pavement and street excavations Shop entrances, bus stops and school surroundings where pedestrian flow must not be cut off.
Infrastructure Utility laying works Works where water, gas and communication trenches stay open for days.
Energy Cable network maintenance Short-duration repairs on distribution networks with heavy pedestrian traffic.
Events Temporary site layouts Cable duct and trench crossings at fairs, festivals and construction sites.
Pedestrians will not wait for the trench. They either find a safe crossing or improvise one.
TULUX · safety crossing bridge

A gap closed with a plank creates new risk every day until the work ends. A bridge built for the purpose closes that risk once.

06 / Frequently asked questions

Before it goes to site.

Six questions

No. The bridge is produced in a single size: 170 cm long, 100 cm wide, 8 cm high. The platform length is set so that the load is carried by the firm ground on either side rather than the trench void, which means there is no size decision to make on site.

That is what the ramped edge is for: it leaves no step between the platform and the ground to stop a wheel. The crossing width comfortably takes one wheeled user rather than two people side by side. At busy locations, two bridges are often installed alongside each other.

The platform surface is textured rather than smooth, precisely to grip wet, snowy and muddy footwear. Even so, accumulated snow, ice, mud and leaves must be cleared regularly — an anti-slip texture cannot compensate for material left on top of it.

No. The product is designed for pedestrian crossing and must not be used for vehicles, plant machinery or loaded barrows. Locations requiring vehicle crossing need a separate solution.

It is not a consumable. Once work at one trench is finished it is lifted out, stacked for transport and reinstalled at the next site. Because the handrail is removable, storage and transport volume stays low.

Yes. We provide the size table and product specification for inclusion as an annex to the tender documents; project-specific dimension and corporate colour requests are taken into the production plan. Share your specification and we will define the right configuration together.
